Pedlar: Jane Harrington, Potter, Habitant NS
Sun Porch Pottery
Jane’s original studio was in the wee sun porch of her 160-year-old farm house, where she lives with sweetie Peter, dog Willow, and cat Fleur. Her current studio, second floor of the garage, has a stimulating view of the Minas Basin and surrounding Valley farmland. Jane has a degree in Technical Theatre from Dalhousie University, Halifax and a diploma in Horticulture from Kwantlen University College, BC. The unconventional education leads her approach to design as if for a theatre production or garden, defining space, enabling function. Jane’s eclectic style is inspired by historical pottery forms for their shape and purpose, while decoration comes directly from her garden as leaf impressions, natural plant shapes and colour. She make pots primarily throughout the winter when the clay in the garden is too frozen to dig.
