Oxen in the field at Ross Farm

Ox Shoeing at Ross Farm

Ox shoeing is a fascinating demonstration of traditional skills, and always piques the interest of visitors to Ross Farm. Like horses, oxen are working animals and require shoes to protect their feet and provide additional traction, especially when pulling heavy loads.

The Morley Blacksmith Shop, built in 1910, houses a large ox sling that has been used for nearly a century to shoe oxen. Our blacksmiths craft all of our ox shoes on-site, a process you can often observe, along with the making of horseshoes and other tools.

Please note: Ox shoeing demonstrations are subject to change. We recommend calling the museum the day before or the morning of your visit to confirm the schedule. Demonstrations typically take place between 9:30 am and 3:00 pm.

The shoeing service is available to all Oxen owners; please call the museum for pricing, available shoeing dates, and other information.
